Bob Dylan – Λογοτεχνικές αναφορές στο τραγούδι Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues

Το Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues είναι τραγούδι του Bob Dylan που κυκλοφόρησε το 1965 στον δίσκο Highway 61 Revisited. Περιέχει 6 στροφές, χωρίς ρεφρέν.

Είναι μια αφηγηματική μπαλάντα που περιγράφει το ταξίδι ενός άνδρα στο Juarez του Μεξικού κατά την περίοδο του Πάσχα. Βρίσκεται ανάμεσα σε αρρώστιες, απελπισμένους, πόρνες και αγίους. Εκεί θα συναντήσει διεφθαρμένες αρχές, γυναίκες για σεξ, ναρκωτικά και αλκοόλ. Το τραγούδι δημιουργεί μια εφιαλτική όψη στον τραγουδιστή έτσι, στον τελευταίο στίχο, θα θελήσει να φύγει και να επιστρέψει στην Νέα Υόρκη.

Στιχουργικά το τραγούδι έχει πολλές λογοτεχνικές αναφορές, ενώ οι εικόνες που δημιουργεί θυμίζει την νουβέλα του Malcolm Lowry, Under the Volcano. Στο τραγούδι αναφέρεται η οδός Rue Morgue που είναι παρμένη από το διήγημα του Edgar Allan Poe, The Murders in the Rue Morgue ενώ ο στίχος Up on Housing Project Hill it’s either fortune or fame παραπέμπει στο μυθιστόρημα του Jack Kerouac, Desolation Angels.

Σχετικά με τον τίτλο, Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues, εικάζεται ότι προέρχεται από το ποίημα του Arthur Rimbaud, My Bohemian Life (Fantasy) στο οποίο ο Rimbaud αναφέρεται ως Tom Thumb.

Πέραν των λογοτεχνικών αναφορών, αρκετοί βιογράφοι του Dylan ισχυρίζονται ότι ο στίχος And she steals your voice and leaves you screaming at the moon κάνει αναφορά στο τραγούδι του Howlin’ at the Moon του Hank Williams.

Now all the authorities, they just stand around and boast How they blackmailed the sergeant-at-arms into leaving his post And picking up Angel, who just arrived from the coast Who looked so fine at first, but left looking just like a ghost

I started out on Burgundy, but soon hit the harder stuff Everybody said they’d stand behind me when the game got rough Yea, but the joke was on me, there was nobody even at my bluff I’m going back to New York City, I do believe I’ve had enough
